The way of the famous doll to the big screen took a long time, but, as the creators of the film assure, the result will please viewers. Initially, Oscar winner Diablo Cody took on the script for "Barbie", she considered only Amy Schumer in the lead role. After Cody dropped out of the project, she admitted that creating a full-fledged world featuring toys was beyond her abilities. "I didn't even present the first draft. I failed so badly with this project, literally couldn't write a Barbie script. Lord knows I tried," the "Juno" author told the 2018 film. "Honestly, that job coincided with writing the script for 'Tully' (2018). I was, really, overwhelmed at the time, and I think I could actually just dive in and produce something super personal. I think the idea of a 'Barbie' movie is super cool, and I hope it comes to fruition."
Months after her approval, Schumer also left the project, citing a mismatch in her work schedule with her filming schedule. The New York native later admitted that there were also creative differences that caused her to leave. "They definitely didn't want to do the movie in a way that I was only interested in doing it," Amy reported in March. She said she wanted to make the character an "ambitious inventor," but that idea was rejected. After Schumer, the role of Barbie went to Margot Robbie. Noah Baumbach ("The Marriage Story") and Greta Gerwig ("Little Women") took over the script, and the latter also took the director's chair. Before filming began, Margot teased that "Barbie" would be the kind of movie "you didn't know you wanted."
The cast of the film.
Ryan Gosling plays the role of Barbie's boyfriend, Ken. The project's cast also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Sima Liu and Alexandra Shipp.
When does it premiere?
Filming of "Barbie" began in 2022, and the picture will be released on the wide screens on July 21, 2023.
What can the audience expect?
In August 2021, Robbie hinted that the role of Barbie comes with "a lot of baggage" and "a lot of nostalgia." "That said, there are ways to curb them. People hear about Barbie and basically think, 'I know what the movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like: "Oh, maybe I don't know," Margo explained.
Who else will be seen in "Barbie"?
In April, it was announced that Will Ferrell would be joining the project, playing the CEO of a toy manufacturing company. Whether or not she will have anything to do with Mattel, the ancestor of Barbie, is not yet known. Also, an extremely Robbie-like Emma McKay will appear in the picture. Fans have already speculated that she could appear on screen as Barbie's younger sister, Skipper.
What will it look like?
In April, Warner Bros. published a photo of Robbie as Barbie, sitting in a distinctive bright pink convertible.
What other options did the role require?
In May, Simu Liu revealed that he went through full body waxing to play one of the versions of Ken. According to the actor, after the painful procedure, he gained respect for women who do it on a monthly basis.
In June, Warner Bros. shared a photo of Gosling as Ken. The star of "The Notebook" movie looks tanned, "polished" and promoting his own name underwear in it.
The main thing is to ensure that the suit fits
In June, Robbie and Gosling were also spotted on set in Los Angeles wearing Wild West-inspired clothing. Ken's outfit included a white cowboy hat, a pink neck scarf, black pants, and a similarly colored shirt with white embroidery and fringe. Barbie's ensemble, meanwhile, was decked out in her favorite bright pink color with the addition of sparkly stars, a look completed by Robbie's long blonde curls and a white cowboy hat.
In June, Margot and Ryan wore matching neon costumes for the filming of the roller skating scene.
The film's atmosphere.
"This is my first movie where the audience knows better how and what should be done," Michael Cera joked in June. "People know about it (even before it comes out) ... In a way, it's all wrapped up, and we have such a good atmosphere. This movie has a great cast, and I think it's going to turn out great. I'm really excited about it."
What does Gosling think of the film?
"I can't wait for people to see the movie. That's all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come and pack me in a box," the actor explained with a smile in July. According to him, the retro roller skating costume has nothing to do with the entire production of the movie.
How much did Margot Robbie earn?
Robbie became the highest paid actress in Hollywood, earning $12.5 million for "Barbie." And most interestingly, the producers of the picture have demonstrated gender equality in pay - Ryan Gosling will receive a similar amount.
